The P-82 platform left the Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore this Sunday (18 October), bound for the Búzios field in the Santos Basin pre-salt, the largest field in Brazil in terms of reserves and production. P-82 is part of Petrobras' group of six giant platforms, with a nominal capacity to produce 225,000 bpd and compress 12 million cubic metres of gas, ranking them among the largest in the global industry.

The unit is the second to head to the Búzios field in less than a month and is expected to begin operations next year. Like P-80, which began its voyage to Brazil on 30 September, the unit is 345.3 metres long, 60 metres wide and weighs more than 100,000 tonnes. The other platforms in the 80 series, P-83, P-84 and P-85, are destined for the Búzios, Atapu and Sépia fields, all located in the Santos Basin pre-salt.

"Even with worldwide recognition for developing and delivering large-scale platforms to operate in Brazil's deep waters, Petrobras is always looking for improvements. This includes ongoing dialogue with shipyards and various suppliers, as well as incorporating lessons learned and innovations," says Renata Baruzzi, Petrobras' Director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation.

What are the advantages

The 80 series has the highest production capacity among Petrobras-owned platforms. These new units incorporate lessons learned from previous construction projects, and all feature advanced technologies and digital solutions that ensure greater operational and energy efficiency.

Why produce in series

Building platforms in series reduces costs and increases productivity at shipyards, while also improving system reliability, reducing project risk and accelerating field development. Another strategy that has been used is to bring the platform to Brazil with the crew already on board and sail directly to its operating location, which contributes to the operational readiness of the systems.

Some of P-82's process modules were manufactured in Brazil at the Seatrium Aracruz shipyard in Espírito Santo, contributing to workforce training, job and income creation, and the development of the country's shipbuilding industry. Modules were also built in Singapore and China and subsequently transported to the shipyard in Singapore for completion of the work.

How was the contract awarded

The construction of the platforms was contracted by Petrobras under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning) model, under which the contractor is responsible for the unit's engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning until its delivery for operation in Brazil.

Petrobras' planned investments for the 2026–30 period total US$109 billion, 75% of which is allocated to Exploration & Production activities.

The Búzios field is operated by Petrobras, in partnership with CNOOC and CNPC, as well as Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA). It is expected to have 11 platforms in operation by the end of 2027.
