In the first week of October, Petrobras’ Henrique Lage Refinery (Revap), located in São José dos Campos (SP), produced asphalt with renewable content on a large scale for the first time in Brazil, combining mineral streams with plant-based components. Around 3,000 tons of the product were produced and marketed, maintaining the performance of conventional asphalts while reducing the environmental impact of paving.

The new asphalt with renewable content, called CAP Pro R, contains a vegetable-based oil with specific characteristics that give the product suitable properties for paving and industrial applications, in addition to strong synergy with the refining of Brazilian crude oils. The pre-production tests were conducted at Petrobras’ Research, Development, and Innovation Center (CENPES), and the product was successfully applied on roads within the University City on Fundão Island (RJ).

“The result of investments in research and improvements in production processes, the production of asphalt with renewable content once again demonstrates Petrobras’ pioneering spirit. We are promoting tangible social and environmental benefits because we believe that a fair and responsible energy transition is both possible and necessary,” said Petrobras’ Director of Industrial Processes and Products, William França.

CAP Pro asphalt line promotes a sustainable chain and emissions reduction

The asphalt with renewable content produced at Revap is now part of Petrobras’ CAP Pro asphalt line. The products in this line are more sustainable and provide solutions for a low-carbon future, while also meeting the requirements of the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

“The arrival of asphalt with renewable content at Revap strengthens Petrobras’ CAP Pro asphalt line. We are delivering effective results for the paving sector, offering a more sustainable and viable alternative that aligns with Petrobras’ commitment to a just energy transition,” said Petrobras’ Director of Logistics, Commercialization and Markets, Claudio Schlosser.

With the production of asphalt containing renewable content, the CAP Pro W and CAP Pro AP asphalts already produced at Revap will now include the “R” for renewable in their names. Similarly, Revap’s conventional CAP 50/70 will become part of the CAP Pro line.

The CAP Pro W 30/45 allows for a reduction in the temperature required during the application process. At the same time, it can increase plant productivity by up to 15% without the need to modify paving equipment. The CAP Pro AP asphalt, with high penetration, is recommended for paving mixes containing about 25% recycled content, thus enhancing the sustainability of the paving chain by reducing waste generation.
