Tupi/Iracema Field Returns to Reaching Production of 1 Million Barrels per Day
With this milestone, Petrobras resumes the production level achieved at the field in 2019 and confirms the pre-salt as one of the most competitive oil frontiers in the industry

The result is aligned with Petrobras' new 2026–2030 Business Plan, which foresees an increase in the oil and gas production curve through reservoir management and maximization of potential, improved production efficiency, increased water injection efficiency, and the mapping of new opportunities.
"We have always believed that Tupi/Iracema could return to producing at past levels. This asset is our first giant pre-salt field, with highly productive reservoirs. Our teams worked hard to ensure the resumption of production to a level consistent with the magnitude of the field. We are very proud to now operate two giants with potential above 1 million barrels per day: Tupi/Iracema and Búzios, both in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin," celebrates Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras.
Throughout 2025, Petrobras connected eleven wells in Tupi/Iracema, which now has more than 150 drilled wells. The company is studying the construction of additional wells, as well as assessing the possibility of a new platform from 2031 onward and extending the service life of some of the nine existing units, guided by the objective of continuous value generation from the asset. The implementation of these activities is subject to the necessary approvals by the consortium and by the ANP, including the analysis of the request for license extension.
"This return of Tupi/Iracema to production of 1 million barrels per day reinforces that the pre-salt, over the past 16 years, has become one of the most competitive oil frontiers in the global industry and a cradle of innovations. A unique combination of giant reserves, high productivity, oil with a lower carbon footprint, and above-average efficiency," celebrates Petrobras' Executive Director of Exploration and Production, Sylvia Anjos.
Of the 57 production platforms operated by Petrobras, 28 are located exclusively in the pre-salt, which in January 2025 reached cumulative production of 7 billion barrels of oil, led by the three largest fields in operation in this layer: Tupi/Iracema, Búzios—the largest in the world in ultra-deep waters—and Mero.
The pre-salt, which accounts for approximately 80% of Petrobras' production, has an unprecedented track record of success. The development of technologies for exploration and production in a geological frontier previously unknown has earned the company international recognition and the creation of a legacy of knowledge for offshore industry projects.
Tupi/Iracema is operated by Petrobras, with partners Shell and Petrogal Brasil, and PPSA, the representative of the Federal Government in the Shared Reservoir of Tupi.
